Kindergarten Word List: Identifying Letters, Blending Words, and High Frequency Words

If you need a homework idea then this is a great activity for you.  This activity allows you to print off a packet and gives the parents the responsibility of going over the different skills with their children.  There is a guideline when everything is expected to be learned.  I use this in my classroom and it has helped me tremendously.

This activity comes with:

  • Parent Letter that explains how to use this product
  • Guidelines (when everything is expected to be learned)
  • Two types of checklist (you decide which one works better for you)
  • Uppercase, Lowercase Letter recognition
  • Consonant Sounds
  • Blending Words
  • The first 30 High Frequency Words from Literacy First
  • every list has flashcards that can be sent home for parents to use

The guideline that comes with this packet gives the parent an understanding of when you want each list to be covered.

I made word cards for every word that is used in this word list.   Parents can use the word cards as flashcards.  They can also play games with the cards.

When parents feel that his/her child is ready to be tested on the word list, the parent checks off that list on the checklist.  When you get it back then you go over that list with the student and write + if they do know it or write down what they missed.

This packet is broken into lists.  It comes with 45 lists.

  • The first nine list covers uppercase, lowercase letters, and consonant sounds.
  • List ten through thirty-nine covers blending words.  I used word families to create the blending words.  The word families are: ab, ad, ag, am, an, ap, at, ed, en, et, id, im, in, ip, it, ob, og, op, ot, ub, ug, un, all, ell, ill.
  • List thirty-five through thirty-nine is a mixture of all of the word families.
  • Then list forty through forty-five covers High Frequency Words from Literacy First (the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it at, be, this have, from, or, one, had, by, me, there, use, an, each, which, she, do how, their, if).

The Common Core State Standards that are covered in this literacy packet are:

RF.K.1, RF.K.1.b, RF.K.1.d, RF.K.2, RF.K.2.b, RF.K.2.d, RF.K.3, RF.K.3.a, RF.K.3.c, RF.K.3.d

This is great for Pre-K through First grade.  This is a very basic start for parents.  If you like this packet, I have bundled all of my High Frequency Words List.  The bundle comes with:
