High Frequency Words Match:

  • 35 Letter cards with high frequency words

This product comes in color and black and white

Here are some ideas on how to use this activity:

1. Give each student either a heart or a letter.  Then have them find their partner.

2. Give each student a heart.  Then hide the letters (sight word cards) around the classroom.  Have students go find their match.

3. Have students play Mingle.  Mingle is where you give each student a card.  You start the game by saying “mingle”.  Students will walk around the room until you say stop.  When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with.  They read their card to them and then switch cards.  Repeat this game until students lose interest.

4. Have students play The 2 Circle Game.  The 2 circle game is where you have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle).  When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them.  Give each student a card.  Students read their card to their partner and switch cards.  Then have the inner circle move to the right one time.  Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.

5. Have students play Memory.  Students turn all of the cards facing down.  Then students flip over 2 cards at a time.  If the cards match then students get to keep it.  If cards do not match then they have to flip the cards facing down.  Complete this until all of the matches have been found.

6. Have students play Go Fish. Have students count out 6 cards for each player.  Put the rest of the cards in a pile in the middle of the players.  Then have a player pick out a card from his/her hand.  Then have them ask for that same card from another player in the game.  If the player has the card then they will give the card to the player.  If that player doesn’t have the card then they will have the player Go Fish!  At the end of the game whoever has the most matches wins.

Bossy R (AR, ER, IR, OR, UR) Activities and Games

This is a fun activity that gives students the opportunity to play different games and activities while learning the Bossy R.  I like to place these activities in centers.  My students really like playing these games.  It gives them the opportunity to work with their friends while doing school work.

In this activity you will find 6 activities:

  1. a word sort
  2. puzzle match
  3. picture and word sort
  4. word match
  5. picture sort
  6. Go Fish/Memory
All of these activities make learning so much fun.  I do want to suggest that you make sure that you teach students how to do each activity before expecting them to do it on their own.  This will help make sure that your centers run smoother.

Here is more detailed information on what you will find in this activity:

Word Sort:

~Have students sort between the words that start with each Bossy R.  Another game is placing the words around the classroom.  Once they have found a word then have them place it under the correct Bossy R.  I have also played a game where I give each student a card and have them get into two circles (one outer and one inner).  I have one circle move clockwise one at a time reading each other their words.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 2 worksheets.

1. The first worksheet is fill in the blank.  Students have to look at a picture and figure out which Bossy R to use. At the bottom of the worksheet is Bossy Rs.  Students then have to write the words from above under the correct Bossy R.

2.  The second worksheet is sorting the Bossy R.  Place the word cards around the room and have students write the words under the correct Bossy R.

There are 10 pages in this activity.

Picture and Word Sort:

~Have students sort the pictures and words by Bossy R.  Another way is having students sort the pictures by Bossy R.  One of my favorite games to play is hand each student a picture or a word card.  (Make sure every picture has a word pair.) Then have students find their partner.

Picture Sort:

~Students place pictures under the correct Bossy R.  You can play this game as a small group, center, or whole group activity.  When I do it as a whole group activity, I place 4 in a group.  Students work together to place the words under the correct category.

Puzzle Sort:

~Students match the words and picture together like a puzzle.  You can hide the pieces around the room and have students find the matches.  You can give students one piece of the puzzle and another student the other piece.  Then they have to find a partner.  After students figure out which puzzle piece goes with what word.  Then have them place the pieces under the correct Bossy R.
