I love using this activity, because I can use it in whole group, small group, or during centers.  There is so much information in this activity that will give students plenty of opportunity to learn this skill.

A Story, Wall Sign, and Ideas:

-The Story explains why ai and ay say their name.  
-The Wall Display has two songs and a short story that goes along with the longer version
-The Printable Story can be sent home so students can practice reading
-Worksheet: students will read the words and write them under ai or ay
-This activity comes in color and black and white

 Here is an example on how to use the story: On chart paper, draw a line in the middle.  Write ai on one side and ay on the other side.  Read the story and sing the songs from the wall sign.  Have students listen for ai and ay words.  Then have them get with a partner and tell them the words that they heard.  After they have told their partner, call on students to tell you what words that they heard and write it on the chart paper under the correct category.

-Students will match pictures to words and sort by ai and ay 
-I left some cards blank so you can fill them out and add pictures
-Worksheet: place words around the room and have students write the words under ai and ay

Word Scramble and Worksheet:

-Students sort the word cards with its picture by ai and ay.  Then unscramble words on the scrambled word card.  The answer is on the back of each card.

 Black and White Word Cards:

-I made a card for every ai and ay word used in this activity.  You can either send the cards home or create games using the cards like Memory or Go Fish.

 Lesson Plans:

-I created lesson plans that could be used for this literacy activity.  Lesson Plans come with common core state standards and ideas on how to use each activity.

 Reading Practice and Home Activity Letters:

-The reading practice letter has words that go with the skill of the week.  It gives parents suggestions how to make reading the words fun.
-The home activity letter has students find a picture that covers the skill for the week and glue on the back of it.  Students can use magazines, online pictures, or draw their own picture.  Students bring back the letter and sort the pictures by the skill of the week.

AI and AY Assessment:

-This tests the skill for the week.  There are two parts to the assessment.  In the first part, students read words.  In the second part, students apply the words into sentences.  On the teacher copy, circle the words that students get correct.  When students are reading sentences, check for the skill words for the week and circle the words they get correctly.  If students get 8/10 right then they have mastered the skill.

 Video Ideas and Books that Teach AI and AY:

-I wrote down videos that cover AI and AY.  I also wrote down books that you can read that will help emphasize on AI and AY.

 Here is an example on how to use this activity: I play several games with word cards as a whole group.  The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circle game.  Mingle is where you give each student a card.  You start the game by saying “mingle”.  Students will walk around the room until you say stop.  When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with.  They read their card to them and then switch cards.  I repeat this game until students lose interest.  The 2 circle game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle).  When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them.  Students read their card to their partner and switch cards.  Then I have the inner circle move to the right one time.  Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.  You can also give each student a picture or a word card.  Then have them find its match.
