When I do this activity, I will first start by placing the ch, sh, th, wh in a pocket chart. I will place them in a way that will allow them to be categorized. Then I will show the pictures and ask students which category the picture should go under. I make sure that all of the pictures go under the correct category. The next thing I do is take all of the pictures out of the pocket chart and give one card to each student. I will then call one student at a time to come put the picture under the correct category. I like doing my lesson in this order because it gives students the opportunity to work with me before I have them try to figure it out on their own.
I also place the pictures around the classroom and have students go find them. I will give each student a worksheet. Students will then go find the pictures. They will sound out the word and write it on the worksheet under the correct category. Before doing this activity, make sure that you have taught your students what each picture is.
Here is some more detail information about this activity:
Picture Sort
-Students sort
pictures by CH, SH, TH, and WH. Then try
to spell out each picture on a marker board.
-Picture sort
comes in color and black and white
-This activity
covers 40 words
Worksheet
This activity
comes with 3 worksheets.
Worksheet #1: Place pictures around the room and
have students write down what each picture is under the correct category. Then have students pick two words from the
list and write them into sentences.
Worksheet #3: Students cut out pictures, and
glue them under the correct category.
-I made a card for every digraph word used in this
activity. You can either send the cards
home or create games using the cards like Memory or Go Fish.
Lesson Plan
-I created a lesson plan that could be used for this
literacy activity. The lesson plan comes
with common core state standards, and ideas on how to use this activity.
Video Ideas and
Books that Teach Digraphs
-I wrote down videos that cover digraphs. I also wrote down books and activities that
you can read or do that will help emphasize digraphs.
Here
is an example on how to use this activity: I play
several games with word cards as a whole group.
The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circle
game. Mingle is where you give each
student a card. You start the game by
saying “mingle”. Students will walk
around the room until you say stop. When
you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up
with. They read their card to them and
then switch cards. I repeat this game
until students lose interest. The 2
circle game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer
circle). When they get into their circle
they make sure that they have a partner that faces them. Students read their card to their partner and
switch cards. Then I have the inner
circle move to the right one time. Continue
to do this until students have made a complete circle.
Common Core State Standards that are covered in this
activity
RF.1.1, RF.1.2, RF.1.3, RF.1.3.a
