Digraphs (Ch, Sh, Th, Wh) Activities and Games

Are you looking for an activity that will give kids the opportunity to work together and keep them engaged, than this is the activity for you.  In this activity students will play different games and activities.  I like to place these activities in centers.  I place them in centers, because it gives students more time to practice this skill.

In this activity you will find 6 activities:

  1. a word sort
  2. puzzle match
  3. picture and word sort
  4. word match
  5. picture sort
  6. Go Fish/Memory
All of these activities make learning so much fun.  I do want to suggest that you make sure that you teach students how to do each activity before expecting them to do it on their own.  This will help make sure that your centers run smoother.

Here is more detailed information on what you will find in this activity:

Word Sort:

~Have students sort between the words that start with each digraph.  Another game is placing the words around the classroom.  Once they have found a word then have them place it under the correct digraph.  I have also played a game where I give each student a card and have them get into two circles (one outer and one inner).  I have one circle move clockwise one at a time reading each other their words.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 2 worksheets.

1. The first worksheet is fill in the blank.  Students have to look at a picture and figure out which digraph starts with that picture. At the bottom of the worksheet is digraphs.  Students then have to write the words from above under the correct digraph.

2.  The second worksheet is sorting the digraphs.  Place the word cards around the room and have students write the words under the correct digraph.

Picture and Word Sort:

~Have students sort the pictures and words by their digraphs.  Another way is having students sort the pictures to the digraphs.  One of my favorite games to play is hand each student a picture or a word card.  (Make sure every picture has a word pair.) Then have students find their partner.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 2 worksheets that cover each digraph.

1.     The first worksheet covers Ch and Sh.

2.     The second worksheet covers Th and Wh

In these worksheets, students will cut out pictures and glue them under the correct digraph.  Then have students sound out the pictures and write the words under the correct digraph.

Puzzle Sort:

~Students match the words and picture together like a puzzle.  You can hide the pieces around the room and have students find the matches.  You can give students one piece of the puzzle and another student the other piece.  Then they have to find a partner.  After students figure out which puzzle piece goes with what word.  Then have them place the pieces under the correct digraph.

Go Fish/Memory:

~Oldie but a Goodie.  The last game I created goes along with the game Go Fish/Memory.  Students find words that match.  You can also play the game by giving each student a card and place their match around the room.  Then you have students go find the match to their card that has been placed around the room.
