Digraphs (Ch, Sh, Th, Wh) Activities and Games

Are you looking for an activity that will give kids the opportunity to work together and keep them engaged, than this is the activity for you.  In this activity students will play different games and activities.  I like to place these activities in centers.  I place them in centers, because it gives students more time to practice this skill.

In this activity you will find 6 activities:

  1. a word sort
  2. puzzle match
  3. picture and word sort
  4. word match
  5. picture sort
  6. Go Fish/Memory
All of these activities make learning so much fun.  I do want to suggest that you make sure that you teach students how to do each activity before expecting them to do it on their own.  This will help make sure that your centers run smoother.

Here is more detailed information on what you will find in this activity:

Word Sort:

~Have students sort between the words that start with each digraph.  Another game is placing the words around the classroom.  Once they have found a word then have them place it under the correct digraph.  I have also played a game where I give each student a card and have them get into two circles (one outer and one inner).  I have one circle move clockwise one at a time reading each other their words.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 2 worksheets.

1. The first worksheet is fill in the blank.  Students have to look at a picture and figure out which digraph starts with that picture. At the bottom of the worksheet is digraphs.  Students then have to write the words from above under the correct digraph.

2.  The second worksheet is sorting the digraphs.  Place the word cards around the room and have students write the words under the correct digraph.

There are 12 pages in this activity.

Picture and Word Sort:

~Have students sort the pictures and words by their digraphs.  Another way is having students sort the pictures to the digraphs.  One of my favorite games to play is hand each student a picture or a word card.  (Make sure every picture has a word pair.) Then have students find their partner.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 2 worksheets that cover each digraph.

1.     The first worksheet covers Ch and Sh.

2.     The second worksheet covers Th and Wh

In these worksheets, students will cut out pictures and glue them under the correct digraph.  Then have students sound out the pictures and write the words under the correct digraph.

Picture Sort:

~Students place pictures under the correct digraph.  You can play this game as a small group, center, or whole group activity.  When I do it as a whole group activity, I place 4 in a group.  Students work together to place the words under the correct category.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 2 worksheets that cover each digraph.

1.     The first worksheet covers Ch and Sh.

2.     The second worksheet covers Th and Wh

In these worksheets, students will use pictures from the activity and write the words under the correct category.  Then students will choose one word from the pictures and write a sentence about it.

Puzzle Sort:

~Students match the words and picture together like a puzzle.  You can hide the pieces around the room and have students find the matches.  You can give students one piece of the puzzle and another student the other piece.  Then they have to find a partner.  After students figure out which puzzle piece goes with what word.  Then have them place the pieces under the correct digraph.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 1 worksheet.  Students will cut out the picture puzzle pieces and glue them next to its word.  At the bottom of the worksheet is digraphs.  Students will use the words from above and write one word under each digraph.

There are 9 pages in this activity.

Word Match:

~Words have been cut up into pieces.  Students have to match the pieces to create words and then match it to its picture.

Worksheet

~This activity comes with 2 worksheets.                                                                                                       1. Students will use the words from the word match and write them under the correct category.  2.  Students will cut out the pictures and glue them under the correct category.

There are 12 pages in this activity.

Go Fish/Memory:

~Oldie but a Goodie.  The last game I created goes along with the game Go Fish/Memory.  Students find words that match.  You can also play the game by giving each student a card and place their match around the room.  Then you have students go find the match to their card that has been placed around the room.

Digraphs Picture Sort

Do you like for your students to move around and have fun while learning a skill?  This is a great activity that will allow you to do just that.  You can either use it in whole group or small group.  It’s a great activity to use to teach or review digraphs.

When I do this activity, I will first start by placing the ch, sh, th, wh in a pocket chart.  I will place them in a way that will allow them to be categorized.  Then I will show the pictures and ask students which category the picture should go under.  I make sure that all of the pictures go under the correct category.  The next thing I do is take all of the pictures out of the pocket chart and give one card to each student.  I will then call one student at a time to come put the picture under the correct category.  I like doing my lesson in this order because it gives students the opportunity to work with me before I have them try to figure it out on their own.

I also place the pictures around the classroom and have students go find them.  I will give each student a worksheet.  Students will then go find the pictures.  They will sound out the word and write it on the worksheet under the correct category.  Before doing this activity, make sure that you have taught your students what each picture is.

Lesson Plan

-I created a lesson plan that could be used for this literacy activity.  The lesson plan comes with common core state standards, and ideas on how to use this activity.

Video Ideas and Books that Teach Digraphs

-I wrote down videos that cover digraphs.  I also wrote down books and activities that you can read or do that will help emphasize digraphs.

Here is an example on how to use this activity: I play several games with word cards as a whole group.  The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circle game.  Mingle is where you give each student a card.  You start the game by saying “mingle”.  Students will walk around the room until you say stop.  When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with.  They read their card to them and then switch cards.  I repeat this game until students lose interest.  The 2 circle game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle).  When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them.  Students read their card to their partner and switch cards.  Then I have the inner circle move to the right one time.  Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.
