Math Candy M&Ms Flashcards, Number Writing, and Activities using numbers 1-30

 

This is a great activity that will help students stay actively engaged while learning their colors, patterns, numbers, counting objects, and early addition problems.

I use this activity during centers.  It is an activity that students can do on their own.  I do recommend teaching students how to use each activity before expecting them to do it on their own.  

I love this activity because it gives students the opportunity to work with numbers 1-30.

Flashcards:
covers numbers 1-30
There are 4 flashcards to each page.  It comes front to back.  On the front of the flashcard is the number and that amount of M&Ms.  On the back is the number and the number word.

 

Number Writing:

covers numbers 1-30
Students will draw the number of M&Ms in a box. Then they will trace and write the number on their own.

 

Addition Worksheets #1:

Students will add M&Ms together and write the answer on a blank. To make it more fun, students can color the M&Ms or use real M&Ms to count with.

Addition Worksheets #2:

Students can either draw, glue paper M&Ms (comes with activity), or use real M&Ms to create their own addition problems.

 

Ten-Frames:

3 different types of ten frames.
-1^st page has one ten-frame
-2^nd page has two ten-frames
-3^rd page has three ten-frames
You can use the ten frames by using the flashcards from this activity.  Have students place the flashcards into a pile and flip one over.  Using that number, students will count out that many M&Ms and place them on the ten-frame. 

 

               

 
 

Different Colored M&Ms:
Comes with 6 different colored M&Ms (red, brown, orange, green, blue, and yellow)
I created the M&M pages to be cut in half. Each half has 30 M&Ms. This is to ensure that there is enough to fit into the ten-frames.

 

Color Sort:

Students can sort out M&Ms by their color

 

                 

 

Patterns:
I created 2 different pattern sheets
-1^st pattern sheet: students have to figure out the pattern, finish it by coloring or gluing M&Ms, and writing the type of pattern it is.
-2^nd pattern sheet: students have to create their own patterns, finish it by coloring or gluing M&Ms, and writing the type of pattern it is.  Students could start the pattern and give it to a friend to finish too.

Groundhog’s Triple Consonant Blend Picture and Word Sort

If you like for your students to move around and work together than this is a activity for you.  

I like to place word cards around the classroom and have students go find them.  When students find the words they write them under its Triple Consonant Blend.  I also like to give students either a picture or a word and then have them find their match.  Both activities are lots of fun.

This activity can be used in whole or small group.  I like to use it in whole group.  It is fun and engaging for the whole class.  Each person is able to participate and interact with each other.

2^nd Worksheet: Students read sentences and fill in the blanks with the words at the bottom of the worksheet.

-I made a card for every word used in this activity.  You can either send the cards home or create games using the cards like Memory or Go Fish.

-I created a lesson plan that could be used for this literacy activity.  The lesson plan comes with common core state standards and ideas on how to use this activity.

Video Ideas and Books that Teach Triple Consonant Word Blends

-I wrote down videos, activities, and books that cover triple consonant blends.

Here is an example on how to use this activity: I play several games with word cards as a whole group.  The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circles game.  Mingle is where you give each student a card.  You start the game by saying “mingle”.  Students will walk around the room until you say stop.  When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with.  They read their card to them and then switch cards.  I repeat this game until students lose interest.  The 2 circles game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle).  When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them.  Students read their card to their partner and switch cards.  Then I have the inner circle move to the right one time.  Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.

***There are 3 different types of worksheets.

1^st worksheet: place words around the room and have students write the words under the correct category
2^nd worksheet: students read the sentence and fill in the blank with the words below.
3^rd worksheet: each worksheet covers a triple consonant blend.  Print off one of the blends and hand it to each student.  Place words around the room and have students find the specific blend that is on the worksheet.  Have students write words into each paint bucket until everyone of them is full.

   

Puzzle Match and Worksheets

-Students will match pictures to words and sort by different triple consonant blends 
-I left some cards blank so you can fill them out and add pictures
-This activity covers 24 words

1^st worksheet: students place words around the room and write the words under the correct category.
2^nd worksheet: students will find a triple-consonant blend and write it in one of the paint chips.  In the box, next to the blend, students will draw a picture of a word that starts with that blend.  In the last box, students will sound out the picture and write the word in the last box.  Students will continue to do this until all of the paint chips have been filled.

  

   

Word Scramble and Worksheets

- Students sort the word cards with its picture by triple consonant blend.  Then unscramble words on the scrambled word card.  The answer is on the back of each card.
-This activity covers 24 words

***There are 2 different types of worksheets.

1^st worksheet: place words around the room and have students write the words under the correct category
2^nd worksheet: Students unscramble words, cut out pictures to glue next to the words, and then write the correct spelling next to the picture.  At the bottom of the worksheet, students will pick one word to write a sentence about it.

Reading Practice and Home Activity Letters

-The reading practice letter has words that go with the skill of the week.  It gives parents suggestions how to make reading the words fun.
-The home activity letter has students find a picture that covers the skill for the week and glue on the back of it.  Students can use magazines, online pictures, or draw their own picture.  Students bring back the letter and sort the pictures by the skill of the week.

   

Triple Consonant Blend Assessment

-This tests the skill for the week.  There are two parts to the assessment.  In the first part, students read words.  In the second part, students apply the words into sentences.  On the teacher copy, circle the words that students get correct.  When students are reading sentences, check for the skill words for the week and circle the words they read correctly.  If students get 10/12 right then they have mastered the skill.
