I love using this activity, because I can use it in whole group, small group, or during centers.  There is so much information in this activity that will give students plenty of opportunity to learn this skill.

A Story, Wall Display, Printable Story, and Worksheet

-The Story is a fun way to read about oa and ow words.   
-The Wall Display has two songs and a short story that goes along with the longer version.
-The Printable Story can be sent home so students can practice reading.
This activity comes with 2 worksheets.
1^st worksheet: The goal is for students to get the snowman to the movie tickets.  Students will color in words that have oa and ow in them.
 2nd Worksheet: Students will read the oa and ow words.  Then students will write each word under the correct category.

Here is an example on how to use the story: On chart paper, draw a line in the middle.  Write oa on one side and ow on the other side.  Read the story and sing the songs from the wall sign.  Have students listen for oa and ow words.  Then have them get with a partner and tell them the words that they heard.  After they have told their partner, call on students to tell you what words that they heard and write it on the chart paper under the correct category.

          

Picture and Word Sort and Worksheets

-Students will match pictures to words and sort by oa and ow 
-I left some cards blank so you can fill them out and add pictures
-This activity covers 22 oa and ow words
This activity comes with 3 worksheets.
1^st worksheet: students circle the words that match the picture.  Then have them pick two words and write them into sentences.
 2nd Worksheet: Have students fill in the blanks with either oa or ow.  Then have students pick words and write them under the correct category. 
 3^rd Worksheet: students read the words in the box and write them under the correct category.  Then students will pick two words and write them into sentences.

               

 

Picture Sort and Worksheets

-Students sort pictures by oa and ow.  Then try to spell out each picture on a marker board.

3rd Worksheet: students cut out pictures and glue them to the words that match them.  Secondly, students will write the words under the correct category.  Lastly, students will pick two words and write them into a sentence.
4^th Worksheet: Students use a word bank to find words in a word search and find boxes that the words fit into.  Then students write the words into the boxes.

                   

       

Word Scramble and Worksheets
-Students can sort between scrambled words or by pictures. 
1^st set of cards are scrambled words with the correct words on the back.
2^nd set of cards have words and pictures
-This activity covers 22 words
There are 3 different types of worksheets.
Worksheet #1:  Students pick a word from the bottom of the worksheet to write a sentence about it.  Continue to do this until all of the words have been used.
Worksheet #2:  Students read the unscrambled words, cut the pictures out, and glue the pictures next to the scrambled word.  Then students will write the correct word next to its picture.  At the bottom of the worksheet, students will pick one word to write a sentence about it.
Worksheet #3: Students walk around the room looking for cards.  Once they have found a card, students will unscramble the word and write the word under the correct category.  When all of the blanks are filled have students pick two words from the list and write them into sentences.

Reading Practice and Home Activity Letters

-The reading practice letter has words that go with the skill of the week.  It gives parents suggestions how to make reading the words fun.
-The home activity letter has students find a picture that covers the skill for the week and glue on the back of it.  Students can use magazines, online pictures, or draw their own picture.  Students bring back the letter and sort the pictures by the skill of the week.

              

oa, ow Assessment

-This tests the skill for the week.  There are two parts to the assessment.  In the first part, students read words.  In the second part, students apply the words into sentences.  On the teacher copy, circle the words that students get correct.  When students are reading sentences, check for the skill words for the week and circle the words they get correct.  If students get 10/12 right then they have mastered the skill.

Video Ideas and Books that Teach oa and ow

-I wrote down videos, books, and activities that help teach this skill.

Here is an example on how to use this activity: I play several games with word cards as a whole group.  The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circle game.  Mingle is where you give each student a card.  You start the game by saying “mingle”.  Students will walk around the room until you say stop.  When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with.  They read their card to them and then switch cards.  I repeat this game until students lose interest.  The 2 circle game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle).  When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them.  Students read their card to their partner and switch cards.  Then I have the inner circle move to the right one time.  Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.  You can also give each student a picture or a word card.  Then have them find its match.
