oa, ow picture sort

Are you looking for an activity that will keep your entire class engaged? This activity helps your students to learn oa, ow while working with each other.

Before using this activity, I like to use my oa, ow picture and word sort or oa, ow word sort. This will give students the opportunity to practice with the skill before giving them just the pictures.

When I do this activity, I will first start by placing the oa and ow in a pocket chart. I will place them in a way that will allow them to be categorized. Then I will show the pictures and ask students which category the picture should go under. I make sure that all of the pictures go under the correct category. The next thing I do is take all of the pictures out of the pocket chart and give one card to each student. I will then call one student at a time to come put the picture under the correct category. I like doing my lesson in this order because it gives students the opportunity to work with me before I have them try to figure it out on their own.

Worksheet

This activity comes with 2 worksheets.

1^st worksheet: place pictures around the room and have students write down what each picture is under the correct category. Then have students pick two words from the list and write them into sentences.

2nd Worksheet: students will read the words, cut out the pictures, and glue them next to its word.

Black and White Word Cards

-I made a card for every oa and ow words used in this activity. You can either send the cards home or create games using the cards like Memory or Go Fish.

Here is an example on how to use this activity: I play several games with word cards as a whole group. The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circle game. Mingle is where you give each student a card. You start the game by saying “mingle”. Students will walk around the room until you say stop. When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with. They read their card to them and then switch cards. I repeat this game until students lose interest. The 2 circle game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle). When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them. Students read their card to their partner and switch cards. Then I have the inner circle move to the right one time. Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.

Are you looking for a whole group activity that will help your students learn oa, ow then this is your activity?

When I do this activity, I will first start by placing the oa, ow in a pocket chart. I will place them in a way that will allow them to be categorized. Then I will show the words and have students sound it out with me. I will then ask students which category the word should go under. I make sure that all of the words go under the correct category. The next thing I do is take all of the words out of the pocket chart and give one card to each student. I will then play Mingle with my students. Mingle is where you give each student a card. You start the game by saying “mingle”. Students will walk around the room until you say stop. When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with. They read their card to them and then switch cards. I repeat this game until students lose interest. Playing Mingle gives students several opportunities to sound out different words and get help from their peers if they need it. My students always enjoy when we play this game. They like the fact that while they are learning they are up and walking around the classroom. Once you have taught this game to your students, each time that you play it the game gets easier.

oa, ow Word Scramble

Are you looking for a different kind of word sort than this is for you? The word cards are scrambled and students have to unscramble them and sort them by oa, ow. I use this activity during whole group learning. I will have students talk to their shoulder partner and try to figure out what the word is. My students really like this activity because it gives them the opportunity to work with their friends and try to figure out the words that are scrambled.

Before using this activity, I recommend using another oa, ow activity that teaches students different words that have that skill in them. It will make using this word scramble much easier.

This activity can be used for literacy centers, whole group instruction, or small groups.

-Students can sort between scrambled words or by pictures.
1^st set of cards are scrambled words with the correct words on the back.
2^nd set of cards have words and pictures

Worksheets
There are 3 different types of worksheets.
Worksheet #1: Students pick a word from the bottom of the worksheet to write a sentence about it. Continue to do this until all of the words have been used.
Worksheet #2: Students read the unscrambled words, cut the pictures out, and glue the pictures next to the scrambled word. Then students will write the correct word next to its picture. At the bottom of the worksheet, students will pick one word to write a sentence about it.
Worksheet #3: Students walk around the room looking for cards. Once they have found a card, students will unscramble the word and write the word under the correct category. When all of the blanks are filled have students pick two words from the list and write them into sentences.
