ie and igh Picture Sort

Are you looking for an activity that will keep your entire class engaged? This activity helps your students to learn ie, igh while working with each other.

Before using this activity, I like to use my ie, igh Picture and Word Sort or ie, igh Word Sort. This will give students the opportunity to practice with the skill before giving them just the pictures.

When I do this activity, I will first start by placing the ie and igh in a pocket chart. I will place them in a way that will allow them to be categorized. Then I will show the pictures and ask students which category the picture should go under. I make sure that all of the pictures go under the correct category. The next thing I do is take all of the pictures out of the pocket chart and give one card to each student. I will then call one student at a time to come put the picture under the correct category. I like doing my lesson in this order because it gives students the opportunity to work with me before I have them try to figure it out on their own.

Picture Sort

-Students sort pictures by ie and igh. Then try to spell out each picture on a marker board.

This activity comes with 3 worksheets.

Worksheet #1: Place pictures around the room and have students write down what each picture is under the correct category. Then have students pick two words from the list and write them into sentences.

Worksheet #2: Students read the words and cut out the pictures, then glue the pictures next to their words.

Worksheet #3: Students cut out pictures, and glue them under the correct category. Then students will pick two pictures (one from each category) and write them into sentences.

Black and White Word Cards

Here is an example on how to use this activity: I play several games with word cards as a whole group. The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circle game. Mingle is where you give each student a card. You start the game by saying “mingle”. Students will walk around the room until you say stop. When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with. They read their card to them and then switch cards. I repeat this game until students lose interest. The 2 circle game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle). When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them. Students read their card to their partner and switch cards. Then I have the inner circle move to the right one time. Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.

If you like for your students to move around and work together than this is a activity for you.

I like to place word cards around the classroom and have students go find them. When students find the words they write them under ie or igh. I also like to give students either a picture or a word and then have them find their match. Both activities are lots of fun.

This activity can be used in whole or small group. I like to use it in whole group. It is fun and engaging for the whole class. Each person is able to participate and interact with each other.

Take Home Letter Cards

Ideas on how to use the Alphabet Popcorn Cards:

1.     You can play Go Fish or Memory
2.     Hide the cards around the classroom and have students find them.
3.     Put alphabet cards into a pile. Have students flip over one card at a time. Then have students write the letter they flipped over onto the alphabet writing page.
4.     You can play games like mingle or 2 circles.
5.     Match popcorns to their containers.

Ideas on how to use the Alphabet Popcorn Writing Page:

1. Hide letters around the classroom and have students write the letters into the popcorn. Once all of the popcorn has a letter in it then the writing page is complete.
2. Once letters have been written into the popcorns, students can go back and rewrite them in a different color. They can rewrite the letters a few times so it will look like a rainbow.

I created these cards so that parents can have the opportunity to work with their children at home with their letters.

School Years Daily Calendar Journal
I tell my students that popcorn words are words that pop up everywhere. We write the words down each day on the daily calendar journal.

I also use the popcorn words as my password. Before entering or leaving my classroom, my students have to tell me the password. My students love the opportunity to tell me the popcorn word. Check out my Password activity.

My main goal is to have students actively with their peers while learning their letters.

There are 3 different types of worksheets.

Worksheet #1: Students walk around the room looking for cards. Once they have found a card, students will unscramble the word and write the word under the correct category. When all of the blanks are filled have students pick two words from the list and write them into sentences.

Worksheet #2: Students pick a word from the bottom of the worksheet to write a sentence about it. Continue to do this until all of the words have been used.

Worksheet #3: Students read the unscrambled words, cut the pictures out, and glue the pictures next to the scrambled word. Then students will write the correct word next to its picture. At the bottom of the worksheet, students will pick one word to write a sentence about it.

-The reading practice letter has words that go with the skill of the week. It gives parents suggestions how to make reading the words fun.

-The home activity letter has students find a picture that covers the skill for the week and glue on the back of it. Students can use magazines, online pictures, or draw their own picture. Students bring back the letter and sort the pictures by the skill of the week.

Bossy R Assessment

-This tests the skill for the week. There are two parts to the assessment. In the first part, students read words. In the second part, students apply the words into sentences. On the teacher copy, circle the words that students get correct. When students are reading sentences, check for the skill words for the week and circle the words they get correct. If students get 8/10 right then they have mastered the skill.
