Bossy R Puzzle Match

Do you need a whole group or small group activity then this activity is for you? 

During our lesson, I will place the ar, er, ir, or, ur cards in a pocket chart.  I will make sure that the cards are placed where I can make a category.  I will then show students the words.  We will sound each word out and then place the words under the correct category.  When we have gone over every word, I will give each student a picture.  They will place the picture over the word in the pocket chart.  When we are done, I will take all of the words and pictures out of the pocket chart.  I will then shuffle the words and pictures.  After that, I will give a student either a picture or a word then have them find their match.  I will do this until students are disinterested.  This activity is a lot of fun for students and gets them up and moving.

I will use this activity in a whole group lesson before I use it in small groups or during centers.  I like to use it in a whole group lesson, because it gives me the opportunity to show students how to sound out each word.  It also helps me to see who is understanding and who needs extra time with this skill.

This activity can be used for literacy centers, whole group instruction, or small groups.

This activity comes with 3 worksheets.
1^st worksheet: place pictures around the room and students write the words under the correct category.
2nd Worksheet: students cut out words and glue them in the right category
3rd Worksheet: students cut out pictures and glue them to the words that match them.  Secondly, students will write the words under the correct category.  Lastly, students will pick a word and write them into a sentence.

-I made a card for every ar, er, ir, or, and ur word used in this activity.  You can either send the cards home or create games using the cards like Memory or Go Fish.

Here is an example on how to use this activity: I play several games with word cards as a whole group.  The main games that I play that my students love is mingle and 2 circle game.  Mingle is where you give each student a card.  You start the game by saying “mingle”.  Students will walk around the room until you say stop.  When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with.  They read their card to them and then switch cards.  I repeat this game until students lose interest.  The 2 circle game is where I have students get into 2 circles (an inner and outer circle).  When they get into their circle they make sure that they have a partner that faces them.  Students read their card to their partner and switch cards.  Then I have the inner circle move to the right one time.  Continue to do this until students have made a complete circle.  You can also give each student a picture or a word card.  Then have them find its match.

Bossy R Word Sort

Are you looking for a whole group activity that will help your students learn the Bossy R then this is your activity?

When I do this activity, I will first start by placing ar, er, ir, or, ur in a pocket chart.  I will place them in a way that will allow them to be categorized.  Then I will show the words and have students sound it out with me.  I will then ask students which category the word should go under.  I make sure that all of the words go under the correct category.  The next thing I do is take all of the words out of the pocket chart and give one card to each student.  I will then play Mingle with my students.   Mingle is where you give each student a card.  You start the game by saying “mingle”.  Students will walk around the room until you say stop.  When you say stop, students are to find the closest person to them to partner up with.  They read their card to them and then switch cards.  I repeat this game until students lose interest.  Playing Mingle gives students several opportunities to sound out different words and get help from their peers if they need it.  My students always enjoy when we play this game.  They like the fact that while they are learning they are up and walking around the classroom.  Once you have taught this game to your students, each time that you play it the game gets easier.

Bossy R Picture Sort

Are you looking for an activity that will keep your entire class engaged? This activity helps your students to learn the Bossy R while working with each other.

Before using this activity, I like to use my Bossy R Picture and Word Sort or Bossy R Word Sort.  This will give students the opportunity to practice with the skill before giving them just the pictures.  

When I do this activity, I will first start by placing ar, er, ir, or, ur in a pocket chart.  I will place them in a way that will allow them to be categorized.  Then I will show the pictures and ask students which category the picture should go under.  I make sure that all of the pictures go under the correct category.  The next thing I do is take all of the pictures out of the pocket chart and give one card to each student.  I will then call one student at a time to come put the picture under the correct category.  I like doing my lesson in this order because it gives students the opportunity to work with me before I have them try to figure it out on their own.

Bossy R Picture and Word Sort

If you like for your students to move around and work together than this is a activity for you.  

I like to place word cards around the classroom and have students go find them.  When students find the words they write them under ar, er, ir, or, ur.  I also like to give students either a picture or a word and then have them find their match.  Both activities are lots of fun.

This activity can be used in whole or small group.  I like to use it in whole group.  It is fun and engaging for the whole class.  Each person is able to participate and interact with each other.
