Sight Words (Fry Words)-The Third Hundred Homework Packet

Homework ideas can be hard to decide on.  This homework packet helps guide parents and gives them a goal to achieve by the end of the school year.

I created this product to help parents and teachers with sight words from the Fry Sight Words List. This packet will allow the parent and student to go at a reasonable pace. There are 10 word lists that have 10 words in each. Parents can use the word cards as flashcards. When the parents think their child is ready to be tested on a word list then they write ready on the checklist. The teacher then goes over the word list with the student. If the student has learned it then the teacher marks off the list with a checkmark. If the student does not pass the list then the teacher writes down the words that the student missed.

     ~Guidelines (when everything is expected to be learned)
     ~Two types of checklist (you decide which one works better for you)

Sight Words (Fry Words)- The First Hundred Homework Packet


I created a sight word homework packet using the Fry Words List.  The sight words in this packet are the first hundred.  This is a great way to help parent/teacher communication.  I have parents practice sight words at home.  Once they feel their children know the list then they let me know.  Students will read the list to me in random order.  Once I feel they know the words then I write passed on a checklist.  Then students work on the next list.  I have really enjoyed using this in my classroom.

High Frequency Word Cards for List A, B, and C

I just got through making High Frequency Word Cards for List C.  The words come from Literacy First.  I use these cards in different ways in my classroom.  I use them as passwords.  Students have to tell me the password before entering the classroom.  I have played whole group games like mingle and 2 circles.  The more students review the words the better they will remember them.

After I created High Frequency Word Cards for List C, I bundled it up with List A and B.  This gives you the opportunity to buy all of the word cards together.  There are 500 High Frequency Words in this activity.

One of my favorite movies

When I get frustrated or I am feeling down about education I like to watch inspirational movies. One of my favorite is The Ron Clark Story. 

The movie is about a teacher that goes into Harlem to teach underprivileged children. It shows his journey and how he was able to reach them. It is based on a true story. This teacher now owns his own school and teaches by his philosophy. It is truly amazing. I hope one day I will be able to go to his school.

My Experience as a First Time Teacher pt 2



After the interview was over I didn’t know what to think.  I remember thinking over and over what kind of kids are these?  What would I be getting myself into?  I didn’t know if I wanted the principal to hire me or not.  The principal finally called me and told me that out of all of the people she had interviewed I seemed the most capable for the job.  The most capable, what does that mean?  When you are referring to misbehaving children that could mean I was a great babysitter.  I accepted the offer over the phone without even taking a look at the school.  I was too excited that someone actually wanted me.  After signing my contract I went to the school to see where I would be working at.  Let me tell you if I had saw it before I signed I would never had taken the job.  It was a Z shaped building with another building right next to it.  Half of it was boarded up.  Apparently, half of the school had been condemned because of old age.  My classroom was the building that was unattached.  The outside was hideous, but the inside was decent.  It had a bunch of chorals where the children would be sitting.  A choral is a desk that has boards on the sides and a board in the middle that the children can write on.  All of these chorals were white.  I had two chalkboards in the classroom, but the chorals were so big that one of the chalkboards was covered.  I did however have a nice big L shaped desk that the school had just bought.  I remember getting a laptop computer and being told to take it home with me every day so students would not break in to steal it.  I also had a camera that was in the corner of the wall so everything that happened in the classroom could be taped.  It was a precaution that they did for the students and the teachers to keep everyone safe.  Like I said what kind of students was I going to have?
