Triple Consonant Blend

I just realized that Ground Hog's Day is nearing and I haven't posted my triple consonant activity.  I made this last year and my students loved it.  They enjoyed the ability to sort between the pictures, the beginning triple consonant blend, and the words.  The different consonant blends that are covered are str, scr, spl, spr, squ, thr.  

I also created another activity to go with triple consonants.  It does not have a ground hog's theme.  It is still a great activity to use when going over this skill.

I try to make worksheets to go along with any activity that I make.  I believe the more hands on learning we can provide for our students the better.  I used both activities in my whole group literacy time.  For instance: I read my students a story about ground hogs.  We discuss the story.  Then I introduce my learning activity to them.  I show them the different triple blend cards.  We discuss the sounds that they make.  Then I place those cards into a pocket chart.  After I am sure my students understand the sounds that they make I move on to using them into words.  I show them the words with the triple consonant and have them sound out the words to me.  I have a student place the word under the correct blend.  I do this for every word.  I give my students the picture cards and have them match the pictures to the words.  After I have shown them, how to sound out the words and match the picture the words, I place the triple blend cards around the room.  Then I give each student a picture or a word.  They have to go find where the blend is and place their card with it.  My students love doing this because I have already given them the answer if they were listening.  This is their opportunity to show me what they know and for them they think it is a game.  After this activity, I would place the words or the pictures around the room.  Then give them the worksheet and have them write the words into the correct blend category.  Now this sounds like a lot and it can be at first.  Once your students understand what to do it goes pretty quickly.  My students loved playing these games.  I usually allowed them to talk to their friends as long as they were getting their work done and there wasn't a lot of distractions.  You could also place the worksheet and the cards into a center.  Before placing it into a center make sure that you have done it whole group at least three times.  You want to make sure students understand what they are doing before trying to do it on their own.

Candy Sight Word Activities

My nephew asked me to create a game like Candy Land for him that covered sight words. He is in Kindergarten and just learning sight words.  I was inspired to create a game that had candy in it.  When I gave it to my nephew he loved it.  I hope you do to.

 

  There are 6 activities and sight word worksheets.

The sight words are: I, I’m, me, am, did, had, he, is, see, the, we, a, an, and, at, big, can, his, in, it, need, said, this, was, be, but, have, not, on, red, run, ten, up, us, of, to

 The activities include:

·         2 sight word games

~The object of the game is to keep as many cards as you can.  When the game is over, whoever has the most cards wins.

·         Bingo

~There is a 3 in a row or 5 in a row.  I have made it where you can print a copy for centers or for the entire class.

·         Scrambled words

~One side of the flashcard is the word and the other side is the same word but scrambled.  The object is to try to unscramble the word.

·         Sight Word Candy Game

~This is a board game that allows students to land on different color boxes.  They have to say the sight word.  If they do not know the sight word then they have to go back to their original spot. 

·         Sight Word Work

~I created worksheets to reinforce sight words.  Each worksheet covers 5 sight words.  Students will write sight words in abc order, color the sight words, find the sight words in a group, find the sight words in a sentence, write the sight words fancy smancy, fill in the boxes, word searches, and rainbow write.

Literacy Activities

I am really enjoying teaching first grade.  It has been challenging, but rewarding.  God has blessed me with so many different ideas.  I came up with three ideas for High Frequency Words and OA and OW. 
                                                        High Frequency Words List A, B, and C

 

 I use these High Frequency Words on my Word Wall.  I made list A and B.  There are two hundred High Frequency Words.  I have also used them to play games like Go Fish, and Memory.

OA and OW Story, Word Display, and Literacy Activities

 

 My students had so much fun learning how oa and ow found each other.  I made a wall display that comes with two songs and a short story.  My students loved singing to the songs.  It really helped them to remember the sounds that oa and ow make.  The literacy activities that come with it are a puzzle sort and picture/word match.  You have to sort both activities by oa and ow.

I really liked making the word scramble.  I showed students the words with a picture.  Then I showed them the words scrambled and had them try to figure out what the words were.  The answers to the words are on the back.  It was really cool to see my students working so hard to try to figure out what a word says. 

My main goal is to have students walking around the room and reading the different words to their peers.

New to Blogging

This has been an interesting trip.  I have learned a lot about the internet and how to blog.  I have also learned that I have the most incredible husband.  He has helped me create this blog and fixed it where it would be user friendly for me.  Thank you Greg for always giving me your support.  May God have all of the credit for the many blessings he has bestowed upon me and my family.

I can not wait to start sharing all of my ideas with each one of you. 

New to blogging

I am really excited about starting something new.  Blogging hasn't been something that I have thought of before. It is more complicated than I thought it would be.  I want to say thank you to my amazing husband and our good friend Hunter for helping make this happen.
